Student Practicum Program

 

Overview

The aim of the Tertiary Sports W.A. Student Practicum Program is to provide a link between University and TAFE students studying Human Movement, Sport Science, Health Promotion and Event Management and State Sporting Associations, Universities, Clubs and Events for the purpose of creating field placement opportunities for students required to complete practicum requirements.

 

How the Program Works

Tertiary Sports W.A. obtains information from State Sporting Associations, University Sport & Recreation Providers, Schools, Clubs and Events on opportunities that exist for Prac Students to gain valuable practical experience in the field.

 

Opportunities

Opportunities exist for students to gain practical experience in a wide range of areas including:

  • Sport event management & administration                
  • Operations & logistics               
  • Marketing, journalism, photography & IT
  • Sport, recreation, fitness & health                            
  • Special events, functions   

Tertiary Institutions & Courses

TSWA has hosted prac students from the following tertiary institutions and courses. Opportunities are not limited to students studying in these areas.                                             

  • Central Institute of Technology (Cert IV Sport Development)
  • The University of W.A. (Sport Science, Exercise and Health)
  • Curtin University of Technology (Health Promotion)      
  • The University of Notre Dame (Sport & Rec Managment)                
  • Edith Cowan University (Exercise & Sport Science)                         
  • Murdoch University (Chiropractic)

Host Organisations & Events

In the past, in addition to offering prac experience with the Tertiary Sports W.A. Inter-University Sport Program, TSWA has organised placements for prac students at the following organisations: 

  • State Sporting Associations including Rugby WA, Hockey WA, Flying Disc Assoc of WA, Volleyball WA and Womensport West,
  • ECU Sports, Murdoch Recreation, Curtin Recreation, UWA Sport & Recreation Association and Notre Dame Student Life
  • Australian University Games and the Indian Rim Asian University Games 

Success of the Program

A number of students who have been involved in events and practicum placements have successfully gained employment either with the organizations they were place with or other organizations in the industry as a result of their involvement in the Program.

In turn, host organisations have benefited by successfully filling positions within their organization by employing students once they have completed their studies.  Past prac students have successfully been employed by UWA Sport & Recreation Association, Hockey WA, Volleyball WA, ECU Sports, and Sydney University Sports Association.

 

How to Get Involved

Students

Register your interest in completing your practicum/field placement requirements with the TSWA Student Practicum Program by completing the Student Practicum Expression of Interest Form and faxing it to 6488 4725, posting it to Tertiary Sports W.A. c/- UWA Sport & Recreation Association, M412 Stirling Highway, Crawley WA 6009 or scanning and e-mailing the form to TSWA at tswa@sport.uwa.edu.au
